The best Christmas ever!

Whatup? 

So, I was celebrating Christmas today and yesterday. My parents are in Nantes, France, for the holidays so I celebrated at my cousins’ place. We ate traditional Swedish Christmas food yesterday, and today we ate Chaldean food at my uncle’s place. Of course, the Chaldean food was WAAAAAAAY better than the NASTY Swedish Christmas food (it’s the first time I’ve ever had a full Swedish Christmas dinner).

But this blog post ain’t about that, it’s about the best Christmas ever! 

The year was 1998. All year long, I’d been seeing these gaming magazines with Mario and Link (from the Zelda franchise) on the covers and I was fiending for those games. So, when Christmas Eve came around, guess what I found under the Christmas tree? A bigass box. I ripped away the wrapping paper and found what I had been wishing for: A Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64 alongside it. That was the best Christmas ever!

What’s up Internetssss?!

Finally got myself a new computer. I thought it’d take me a week or two, but I had a hard time choosing a computer so it took me more than a month. The thing is, I have school til’ Wednesday before I go on a break, so I probably won’t write anything until then. After that I’ll probably review Joe Budden’s last mixtape, Trinidad Jame$’s mixtape, Fabolous’ mixtape, maybe Starlito’s mixtape. I’ll also do a vintage mixtape review on Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia/Ultra and a couple other mixtapes as well as continue my Happiness Guide.

Chasing Happiness, Sam’s Guide To Happiness – Part 2

So, I hoped the first part helped anyone. This is part 2.

Rule #2 is… (*drum roll*) search for things that you love.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people do things that they don’t really care for, or even hate and that they lack things they love to do.

Let’s take me as an example. I hate working, especially working with a nagging, annoying boss and even more when it’s a job that I don’t like in any way. I worked at a hotel a couple of months ago, with the worst boss in existence, who forbade me to do the one thing I did enjoy, speak to people. After that experience, I decided that I won’t work unless it’s something that I find genuinely interesting or pays me extremely well.

I love music, especially hip-hop, I love sneakers, I love playing video games, watching movies, learning all kinds of shit, reading interesting books, watching TV-shows, going to concerts, among other things. Basically, I’ve got a lot of shit I have an interest in and that I enjoy.

Now, let’s take a female classmate of mine. She doesn’t like her (vastly underpaid) job (to be fair, she didn’t say she didn’t like it, but I’m assuming she doesn’t like it lol), she doesn’t like the classes we’re taking and she, from what I’m getting out of her, doesn’t seem to be interested in anything, really. And it’s kind of sad, actually. How can you not have an interest in anything? No wonder people aren’t happy.

So, my tip for you is to find stuff that you love, stuff that you can invest your time in and immerse yourself in, that you can talk to other people about. Because if there isn’t anything or anyone you love out there, then what’s the point of living? Just going day-to-day doing nothing? Nah, pursue things you love, and it’ll make you much happier.

Chasing Happiness, Sam’s Guide To Happiness – Part 1

So I’m a pretty happy person. At least I’d like to think I am, maybe it’s just some faux happiness that I project onto myself, but it works for me. I have my ups and downs but I mostly feel happy. I noticed that a lot of people aren’t happy, though, and that saddens me. People live their lives doing things that they hate, things that make them unhappy, and that bothers me because, well at least to me, life is about finding happiness. Sometimes, there are tough times when you have to just work hard to get to a point of happiness, but overall, I think life is about being happy, spreading peace and making love. So I’d like to introduce you to my guide to happiness. This is just me, okay! This doesn’t work for everybody, nor is it really recommended for everybody because everyone is different, everyone doesn’t like the same things, and you have to adjust it to yourself. But let me give it a shot.

Okay. So rule 1 to get to happiness:

Care less! Yes, you read that right. Don’t care so much. People care too much about extremely unnecessary things. Let me take my father for example. He’s probably the most unhappy man in the world, well at least that I know of. And that’s mostly because he minds everybody’s business and gets mad when people don’t do as he wants them to do. I’ve told him hundreds of times, just don’t care about my grades (oh, I got a D on my exam by the way, not an E, woop woop), don’t care about what time my brother goes to sleep, don’t care about my uncle’s gambling problem, don’t care about my mom’s shopping. Just. Don’t. Care.

Let’s say I get an F on a test. Most of my friends would be super pissed, and yeah, I get pissed too, but I know it’s just a freaking test. It’s not the end of the world. Move on. Care about different things, more important things. Getting mad at failing a test just causes negativity that affects your happiness in a way that causes downward spirals.Like, I have three failed courses right now and I don’t even go to retake the test, haha. My friends are like “how the fuck are you ignoring your tests? Aren’t you mad that you failed those three courses?” and I’m like, no, I’m not mad. Why should I be mad? It’s up to me in the end, I didn’t study for those tests (actually, I haven’t even gone once to my accounting test, and I’ve had five chances, so yeah, haha) and I know I’ll pass when I have the urge to study for them.

The problem with not caring is that it’s really a mentality thing. You have to have a strong mind, because there are things so negative that they can break you, like a death in the family for example, and in that case, it’s better to embrace the negativity, digest it and then turn it into motivation. It takes a while to get used to this frame of mind and it doesn’t suit everyone. So beware!

When people say “life is what you make it”, they really mean, “if you want to be happy, do things that make you happy, if you want to be unhappy, do things you hate”. And that’s what I do, I don’t care about negative stuff or people. I ignore that, or them. I care about things that make me happy, people that make me happy. If you want to be a happier person, I suggest you do too.

Vintage Mixtape Review / Jay Rock – Black Friday

What’s up internets?!

Okay, so I finally got to listening to Jay Rock’s 2010 mixtape, Black Friday. Not gonna lie, until just a couple months ago, I held Jay Rock as the weakest link of Black Hippy (and if you didn’t already know, Black Hippy is a loose group that consists of Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q and the aforementioned Jay Rock). I, unfairly, never gave Rock a real chance because I saw him as a typical westcoast gangster rapper, which is a type of rapper I don’t usually fux with. And it’s not like I’ve never listened to Jay Rock before either. Diary of a Broke N***a and Tolerate are some of my favorite songs that’ve been released in the last few years.

I don’t know, I probably just didn’t believe he could pull of creating a really good mixtape. Well, let’s just say I was terribly wrong. He did just that. Create a really, really dope mixtape. Black Friday is full of bangers, from the first track, No Joke, til the last (bonus) track, the Black Hippy featured Shadow of Death. The production is good, not perfect, but it’s good for a mixtape. Perhaps a bit unbalanced. If you listen to a Kendrick Lamar or even Ab-Soul project, there’s usually more of a balance in the production, not too much of the same, which sadly isn’t quite the case here, even though it’s not imbalanced either, like say Schoolboy Q’s Habits & Contradictions, where the beats were mostly similar to each other throughout the project.

Lyrically, Jay Rock does a good job of finding a balance with his gangster rap and at the same time telling hood stories that are uplifting. His flow is really, really good and his voice? Wow.

I don’t think any of the tracks are bad, which is good, because usually on mixtapes, I find at least a couple tracks that I don’t like. Songs like No Joke, Diary of a Broke N***a, Money Makin’ Moves and Shadow of Death are specific standout tracks in my opinion. I believe Jay Rock has everything needed to blow up. He has the lyrics, he can craft songs, he has an amazing voice and his flow is very good. I don’t know if the Black Hippy crew really is the best one for him, mostly because Black Hippy fans aren’t usually the demographic Rock’s music appeals too, but he’s been getting his spit on on Say Wassup, he killed it on Money Trees, had the best verse on Ab-Soul’s Black Lip Bastard remix. If he continues like this, neither Black Hippy nor mainstream fans can ignore him any longer. Jay Rock – Black Friday
